The Water Diet – Is It Safe and Does It Work?
The Water Diet has been around for years now, and still many people don’t know what it is or whether it can work. Many people believe that it replaces food with water but this is not all.
In this article we will discuss two of the most important questions you should ask about nutrition – ‘Does it work?’ and ‘Is it safe?’
Before we get to this question, we will first discuss exactly what it is.
Some people believe that the Water Diet includes fasting and drinking water which can lead to the danger of malnutrition. This is not so. Fasting is not safe or healthy, or indeed effective in the long term, weight loss process. Drinking more water while fasting will not make this a good way to lose weight. No nutritionist would recommend fasting as a weight loss method, with or without water, for good reason. Thankfully, fasting is not a part of the Water Diet.
What the Water Diet really is, to put it simply, is to drink a lot of water while eating or adding to other healthy foods. A popular method is to eat normally and drink an 8-oz glass of cold water immediately before each meal, one during and one immediately after. This is called the Before, During and After Meals. A little different from this, and believed to be a better way, is to combine the drink with more food that is recommended by your nutritionist. However, the most important part of the Water Diet is that at least eight 8-oz glasses of cold water are consumed daily.
At first glance it doesn’t seem like a good way to lose weight. After all, how to drink water to lose weight? However, there are some reasons why it can work and some recent studies have shown that it is effective for weight loss.
The research in question was conducted at Virginia Tech and was presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) by senior author Brenda Davy, Ph.D. Clinical trials have shown that adults who drink two glasses of water before their meal, while eating a low-calorie diet, eat up to 90 calories less during the meal. Over the course of 12 weeks the drinkers lost around 44% more weight (about 5 pounds) than those who didn’t.
The best thought is that by filling your body with water, you won’t need to eat as much as you want which makes you eat less. Another reason people believe that the Water Diet will work is that by drinking a lot of cold water, your body has to burn more calories to warm the water to your body temperature. Although this is true, the calories used in this process are not that much and will not have a significant impact on weight loss.
So, what is that and how is it supposed to work, but does it work? Well, the short (and unhelpful) answer is yes and no. For some it has worked very well and for others, not so much. The main problem seems to be the amount of water that needs to be drunk. Some people feel uncomfortable and bloated and together with frequent visits to the bathroom, this is enough to make them feel depressed.
However, for others, it can lead to success. The best example, according to media reports, is 41-year-old Blake Silva. After a number of failed diets and weighing 270 pounds, he started before, during and after meals, in which he said that he had eaten all normally, but drank up to 10 glass of water every day. Over seven months he lost 70 pounds. There are other reports of success as well, although not very effective, with weight loss varying from person to person.
So, we know it can work for some, but is the Water Diet safe? Well, the good news is, it is. Although drinking too much water can, in some rare cases, be dangerous, it takes more than 8 glasses of water to be dangerous. In fact, it is incredibly healthy and good for your body. The benefits of drinking more water include, among others, helping your body to eliminate toxins, improving your mood and energy and even helping you look younger and healthier by helps keep your skin hydrated.
Finally, does it work in the long run? Well, like any diet, it only makes long-term changes if you don’t go back to the bad habits and lifestyle that made you fat to begin with. That’s not to say you have to stay on a regular diet though. The best way to control body weight is to eat a healthy diet and exercise. There are many good articles about healthy eating so I won’t go into detail but eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid fatty foods is a good way to start. Combining this with a little exercise, such as walking every day, will mean you are on the way to avoiding the need for future weight loss.
